California’s inmate firefighters choose to take part in the grinding and dangerous work they do. They have to pass a fitness test before they can qualify for fire camps. But once they’re accepted, the training they receive — which often lasts as little as 3 weeks — is much less than the 3-year apprenticeship that civilian firefighters get. At Malibu 13, one of 3 conservation camps that house women, #firefighters can make up to $2.56 a day in camp and $1 an hour when they’re fighting fires. That’s wildly low by outside standards, but much better than what most of California’s inmates earn: between 8 cents and 95 cents an hour. And compared with life among the general prison population, these camps are places of calm. Malibu is kissed with salt air and shade. The inmates eat civilian food cooked by other inmates: rib-eye steak and lobster and all-you-can-eat shrimp. One inmate incarcerated there even leads yoga and meditation sessions — photographed here by @peterbohler for @nytmag. But, of course, the benefits of greater freedom and superior food also come with a physical cost.
