Welcome to Voznesenka, a village more than 200 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska. This is a community of Old Believers, a secluded offshoot of the Russian Orthodox Church that resisted reforms in the mid-17th century. For years, Old Believers have pursued isolation in places like Siberia, China, Canada, Oregon and — beginning in the late 1960s — Alaska. They still adhere to traditionalist worship, customs, dietary restrictions and styles of dress. When the Voznesenka school got a computer in the early 1990s, parents kept their kids home for 2 weeks in protest. But gradually, many began to welcome the internet, TV and sports like football. Of course, all activities are scheduled around more than 40 religious celebrations every year. Church begins as early as 2 a.m. on Sundays, and lasts 4 to 6 hours. And athletes have to adjust their diets according to certain restrictions. Maybe that’s why no one remembers the last person — or any person — from Voznesenka who went to college on an athletic scholarship. But 18-year-old Nikit Anufriev, a football player and wrestler, wants to be that person. “People say, ‘Don’t go to college; you’re not going to get anywhere, it’s a waste of time,’” said Nikit, who @victorblue photographed playing Frisbee. “But I want to try something new. To see the world is a big thing.”
