Alaska skates are oviparous creatures, meaning they reproduce by laying eggs. A female will lay her eggs in a protective case made of collagen, also known as a mermaid’s purse. In a year, she will lay 20-40 cases, each of which will sink to the bottom of the sea floor, incubating for almost four years before a fully a developed baby skate emerges.
Many skates have a flap of iris tissue called a pupillary operculum hanging over their pupil like the one shown here. This flap can extend and contract in order to control the behavior of light entering the skate’s eye, providing a larger visual field and heightened sensitivity to its surroundings. Biologists believe the little star-shaped structures on the skin reduce drag in the water and allow the skate to swim not only more efficiently, but also more quietly, allowing it to easily sneak up on prey.
This skate was photographed at the @alaskasealifecenter, a facility that is primarily dedicated to marine research and education, and the only permanent marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation facility in the state. .
