California tiger salamanders are relatively large and dark colored with yellow-cream spots running down their sides and backs. They’re nocturnal creatures, only coming out of their underground burrows at night to feed on a variety of invertebrates. Fishless, vernal ponds are essential for these salamanders to breed because they provide a temporary home for their young to develop in before undergoing metamorphosis. These salamanders are endangered in California due to habitat loss from urban development and farming.
