A Hawaiian short-eared owl at the @thelosangeleszoo. This bird was a stow-away on a ship from Hawaii to California. Her name is Halakahiki, which means 'Pineapple' in Hawaiian. Unlike most owls, Hawaiian owls are active during the day, hunting for mice, rats and other small mammals. Males of this subspecies will perform aerial displays known as “sky dancing” in order to impress potential mates during breeding season.
Once widely distributed in Hawaii, it’s believed that the population of the Hawaiian owl is now declining. Major threats to this owl include loss of habitat, predation by introduced species, disease and collisions with cars.
