Tortoise beetles are named for their green, shell-shaped bodies resembling that of a tortoise. These beetles feed on leaves, and their larvae have an interesting habit of camouflaging themselves with their own feces. By constructing what's called a ‘fecal shield’ the bugs create both a physical and chemical protective barrier against predatory insects. Although they serve an important purpose in protecting the larvae, the shield can weigh almost half as much as the bug itself. Carrying around such a huge structure costs the young bug an extreme amount of energy that could have been used for development.
