Flowers and a photograph of Heather Heyer, the sole fatality after a vehicle struck a group of counter-protesters on Aug. 12 in #Charlottesville, Va., lie at a makeshift memorial as mourners gathered the following day. ⠀
⠀
Violence erupted in the Virginia college town after hundreds of white nationalists and their supporters, who gathered for a protest over plans to remove a Confederate statue, sparred with counter-demonstrators. Intense clashes boiled over that afternoon when a vehicle drove into the crowd of counter-demonstrators before speeding away, killing Heyer and injuring 19 others.⠀
