In Venezuela, a raid on an army base on Aug. 6 marked a troubling escalation from the protests that have convulsed the nation since April. For months, demonstrators have faced off against police and soldiers with rocks, Molotov cocktails and cardboard shields in clashes that have cost more than 120 lives. They have also dodged the bullets of paramilitary groups who claim loyalty to the socialist vision of President Nicolás Maduro’s predecessor and mentor, Hugo Chávez.⠀

Despite sitting on the largest oil reserves on the planet, Maduro has steered the economy into hyperinflation that has left millions hungry and poor. During remarks Friday evening, President Trump said he would not rule out a "military option" in Venezuela. Here, as Maduro creeps closer to outright dictatorship, are scenes from Venezuela's last gasp of democracy.⠀
