By mid-afternoon on Aug. 13, less than a day after her friend Heather Heyer was killed while protesting a group of white nationalists who had gathered in #Charlottesville, Va., Felicia Correa had raised more than $166,000 to benefit Heyer's family. Donations poured in through a GoFundMe page set up by Correa after Heyer, 32, was identified as the fatality after Saturday's car-ramming of counter-protesters.⠀

Correa and Heyer grew up together near Charlottesville, the Associated Press reports, and Correa said she was compelled to help the family after hearing about Heyer's death. "She was no different from a soldier fighting in a war. She was a casualty of war," Correa said before thanking those who participated in the counter-protests. "There were people of all races out there, and it made me proud. But it's her face and her name that everybody will remember."⠀

The suspected driver of the car, identified as James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, was charged with second-degree murder and other counts.⠀
