Authorities in Charlottesville, Va., responded to the scene on Aug. 12 after a vehicle mowed into a group of people marching peacefully through the downtown area. The incident, which came about two hours after clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters, resulted in at least one death and 19 others wounded. The white nationalists were rallying against plans by the city of Charlottesville to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, the Associated Press reports.
