As officials try to make sense of the violent clashes surrounding a white nationalist rally in #Charlottesville, Va., on Aug. 12, the mother of the man suspected of plowing his car into a crowd of counter-protesters is also trying to understand it all. Samantha Bloom, who identified herself as the mother of James Alex Fields Jr., first learned of her son's apparent involvement during a media interview in Maumee, Ohio.⠀

She appeared stunned after being told about footage that showed the 20-year-old's car speeding into other vehicles and the crowd of counter-protesters, before backing away and fleeing the scene. "Running his car into a crowd of people? Did it hurt anybody?" Authorities reported one fatality after the incident and at least 19 others injured. Among the charges for Fields is a count of second-degree murder.⠀

Bloom knew her son planned to attend the "Unite the Right" rally in Virginia but wasn't aware of its connection to white nationalists, saying she has tried to "stay out of" his political views. "I thought it had something to do with Trump. Trump's not a supremacist," she added.⠀
