#regram from @nytarchives | In the summer of 1964, our photographer Sam Falk took this photo of 2 kids going for a spin — quite literally — on the #StatenIslandFerry. “Since its origins as a sailboat service in 1713, the Staten Island Ferry has been more than a way to get from here to there; it has inspired painters, photographers and poets,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported in 2005. 2 years later, the paper took a less artistic look at the ferry, calling it “public transportation masquerading as a tourist ride.” The article went on: “Few landmarks of New York are as clearly divided between locals and out-of-town visitors.” And few subways provide a view of Lady Liberty and the city’s #skyline with a sea breeze to boot. For those hoping to find the differences between tourists and Staten Islanders, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ offered clues: The locals “walk ahead with purpose, finding a bench on the boat’s saloon deck and settling in with a newspaper or book.” And the tourists “head straight for the stairs to the boat’s upper 2 decks with cameras at the ready.” #⛴️ #? (Do you like photos like this one? We share one #vintage NYT photo every day on @nytarchives.)
