Until recently, the world considered North Korea largely a menace on the Korean Peninsula. But yesterday — one day after President Trump warned of unleashing “fire and fury” against North Korea — Kim Jong-un singled out the American territory of Guam as a potential target. On Guam, life continued as usual despite the looming tensions. Patrons packed local restaurants, barely glancing at televisions bearing news of North Korea’s latest threat. One third of the island is owned by the U.S. military, so life there is deeply tied to military bases and the service members stationed at them. “Everyone is nervous, but I think it is our families out there stateside that are more nervous for us,” said Josie Sokala, who lives in the village of Mangilao on the eastern shore of Guam. In addition to being a key strategic base, Guam is also a tourist destination. @nancyborowick photographed these children riding in a train at a night market last month in Hagatna, where locals and tourists mingle every Wednesday night. “There’s been a lot of rhetoric coming out,” Guam’s governor, Eddie Baza Calvo said on Wednesday. “And it’s important to bring that message out to the people of Guam that this is not a time to panic.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @nancyborowick.
