#SpeakingInDance | “Stanley is doing Ailey,” the choreographer Netta Yerushalmy said of the dancer Stanley Gambucci (in green). Here, he’s performing a section from @alvinailey’s #Revelations in @madsqparknyc. But “it’s all chopped up and destroyed,” Netta said. As part of her series, Paramodernities, dancers learn movement material via video by Ailey, Martha Graham, Vaslav Nijinsky and Merce Cunningham. The hitch? They’ve never trained in those techniques. “We assume that we know enough about dancing to use our eyes to deduce,” Netta told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “And what we don’t know will be interesting. We’re all doing it wrong.” Or, maybe, it’s so wrong it’s right: When you put a section of Cunningham’s “Sounddance” right up against Graham’s “Night Journey,” traditions merge and a new dance is made. In this second week of her residency at Josiah McElheny’s #PrismaticPark, Netta works with her dancers in full view during afternoon and evening hours. On Friday at 5 p.m., she will show what she’s created so far; and on Saturday at 6 p.m., she’ll lead a discussion, “How Many Modernities Are There?” @adamgolfer made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
