After more than a decade spent fighting Islamic insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, the @usarmy is scrambling to relearn Cold War-era skills to confront potential threats from #Russia in Eastern Europe. The adjustments are wide ranging. Hundreds of desert-tan battle tanks and armored fighting vehicles must be repainted dark green to blend into European terrain. Soldiers used to working out of large, secure bases have to learn to use camouflage netting to disguise their positions and to break into smaller groups to avoid sophisticated surveillance drones. “We have to figure out how to adapt to this new environment,” said Col. Clair A. Gill, who commands the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, which flies Apache, Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. @gordonwelters photographed these paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne during a night jump as part of a military exercise last month involving 25,000 American and allied forces spread across Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The Army’s training centers are now including more scenarios that replicate Russian forces, but they're careful to give the opposing forces fake names to avoid ruffling diplomatic feathers even more between Washington and Moscow.
