This summer, we selected 6 #poems by contemporary American poets and asked 6 photographers to let the words inspire them. ✨ @ninarobinsonnyc read “N’em” by the poet @jerichobrown1. (Swipe left to read the poem.) With his words in mind, Nina thought back to a photograph she took of her Aunt Jean in 2014. “I’ve stared at that image for so long,” she said. So, she decided to make a series of similar portraits around Arkansas, where the 2 visited sites from Jean’s past. In the first portrait, Jean stands by a row of red canna lilies outside of her mother’s home in Dalark, #Arkansas — the same town in which the second photo was taken. Swipe left to see Jean recalling the dirt roads she walked as a kid in Cartertown, Arkansas, where her mother grew up; visiting her aunt’s house; standing at the site of her segregated school; and observing the cemetery where her grandparents are buried. In the final photo, Jean is standing in a place that reminded her of a spot where she once made out with her ex-husband. “After William Earl and I got married, we thought it would be fun to go find a spot and ‘neck,’” she told her @ninarobinsonnyc. #poetry
