There is an inherent challenge of transporting the world of the film “Avatar” to a theme park: The movie’s Na’vi inhabitants had to contend with viperwolves, while visitors to Pandora: The World of Avatar mostly have to contend with crowds and lines. The park aims to give fans of the film the same jaw-dropping, immersive experience they got when they first saw the movie. Did @Disney’s Animal Kingdom pull it off? The answer, Mekado Murphy writes in @nytimestravel, is a resounding yes. A team of Imagineers — employees of @waltdisney Imagineering, which handles design and development — worked closely with the film’s director, James Cameron, and its producer, Jon Landau, to transport guests to the place where the mountains are floating and the flowers are glowing. The cluster of floating mountains that hovers over the land’s center is likely the first thing that will catch a visitor’s eye. A group of more than 60 artists worked on hand-carving the rock and connecting 22 mountains with greenery — including imagined plants like dapophet and goblin thistle — to give the impression that they’re defying gravity.
