A beach, an airport, a rest stop, a graveyard, an outlet mall bathroom: These are a few of the places where Marlee Grace has filmed herself dancing. The 29-year-old #dancer is the artist behind @personalpractice, a trove of videos documenting her daily practice. Instagram has become a go-to forum for dancers recording themselves, but @personalpractice stands out. Maybe it’s her musical selections, which range from Justin Bieber to wind and waves; her playful, impulsive choices; or the sense that she’s just dancing for herself. For about a year, beginning in the fall of 2015 — when she went through a divorce and moved from Michigan to the West Coast — Marlee filmed herself just about every day. Today, she has more than 27,000 followers. That’s a lot for an experimental dancer with no institutional or company affiliation — “just a 29-year-old lady, living in a cabin, using Instagram,” as she put it. “I struggle with addiction and can be a little bit spacey and have trouble with commitments,” Marlee told our reporter @siobhanfburke, “so it was rare for me to do something many days in a row. It made me feel good about myself to practice this form of improvising.” @amyharrity took this photo in Point Reyes Station, California. Follow her to see more portraits of @personalpractice.
