A juvenile red-headed vulture at @ParcoNaturaViva in Italy.
This species is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List due to an extremely rapid decline in range and population. Parco Natura Viva is the only zoological garden in the world able to breed this species. Two chicks have been reared at Parco Natura Viva, a female in 2013 and the male pictured here in 2016, providing an important contribution to the captive population of the red-headed vulture. Asha, which means Hope, is the name of the young vulture born in May 2016. When a species is critically endangered, intensive efforts must be made both to ensure the survival of the remaining individuals in the wild and to maintain a healthy captive population.
