The Hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana) is amongst the most endangered of all otter species. It is found in preserved freshwater habitats in South-East Asia and faces threats such as pollution of waters and wetlands, loss of habitat, and poaching. This otter species was displayed in only one zoo throughout the world, Phnom Taman Wildlife Rescue Center, near Phnom Penh in Cambodia. This particular individual was a 10 year old male named Pursat and the only one of his kind living under human care. He died peacefully last month, under the care of his dedicated keepers.
@Wildlife_Alliance, who cared for this animal and many others brought in for rehab here, operates the only mobile education team in Cambodia, bringing structured conservation education to rural areas where the illegal wildlife trades often begin.
