A male capercaillie at Alpenzoo in Innsbruck, Austria.
Although this bird was calm, cool and collected during our photoshoot, they can get quite aggressive with other males in the wild during breeding season. The capercaillie is among the most sexually dimorphic of all living bird species-- meaning the males and females have very evident physical differences. Male capercaillie are two times larger than females and have a dark plumage whereas females are smaller and light brown. Because of their body weight and small wings, these birds aren’t very graceful in flight. When taking off they produce lot of noise, which actually benefits them by frightening predators. Capercaillie have an interesting courtship display during which they “dance” and make a variety of odd noises, including one that sounds like a popping cork.
