While this species is now listed as ‘least concern' on the #IUCN Red List, it was virtually eliminated from the United States in the late 1800’s as a result of the destruction of wading bird colonies by plume hunters. Bright pink feathers proved too hard to resist and were used in ladies’ hats and fans, while the meat was sold for consumption. By the 1930’s the population had dropped to a low of only 30-40 breeding pairs nesting on the keys of the Florida Bay. Special protected areas were set aside in the 1940’s and this species was finally listed as protected. Luckily, as a result of these actions, the roseate spoonbill was able to rebound and recolonize in Texas and Florida, and their presence in dozens of countries has helped it to maintain a stable population trend.
