This Nubian ibex was photographed at Wildlife Reserves Singapore (@wrs.ig). They are most notable for their striking, backward-arching horns. On males, these horns can reach up to 120 centimeters (close to 4 feet) in length and are used to physically compete with other males for the right to breed. Nubian ibexes are native to dry, rocky deserts and other mountainous areas of northeastern Africa and parts of Arabia. They are listed as vulnerable on the #IUCN Red List and are threatened by a combination of competition with livestock for water and space, poaching, and habitat loss due to human development. Currently, it is estimated that less than 2,500 individuals are left, and that number is steadily decreasing. Luckily, there is some action taking place to protect this species such as breeding programs and hunting bans, however in many areas these laws are difficult to enforce.
