This Father’s Day let’s celebrate one of the world’s best dads, the seahorse. Male seahorses go above and beyond by not only living monogamously, but by actually becoming pregnant themselves. Lined seahorses like this one perform mating dances with their partners every morning that solidify their bond for life. While mating, the two make clicking noises and circle one another until they embrace-- their clicking sounds then unify and become indistinguishable from one another. The female releases her eggs into the male’s brood pouch where they will be fertilized and incubated for 20-21 days. When the time comes, the male will wrap his tail around a plant or other stable object and lurch back and forth until each individual baby seahorse pops out of his pouch and swims away. Out of the 250-650 seahorses that are hatched, just two will survive into adulthood.
