The United States is the biggest carbon polluter in history. But this afternoon, President #Trump announced that he will walk away from the #Paris climate deal, a 195-nation agreement on #climatechange reached in 2015. @nytmills took this photo shortly after the president spoke in the Rose Garden. The address made good on a campaign promise and aligned with the “America first” message. The decision is a momentous setback for the global effort to address climate change. The idea of the deal was that every country, rich and poor, would set goals to curb #carbonemissions in an effort to avert the worst effects of climate change. Now, the U.S. will join Nicaragua and Syria as the only nations that aren’t a part of the Paris agreement. Many in the manufacturing and fossil fuel industries lobbied for the U.S. to leave the pact, but corporate opinion has been deeply split. So what’s next? For one thing, under the terms of the agreement, the U.S. can’t exit until the day after the next presidential election. Visit the link in our profile to learn more.
