“When we tell the parents we have a dog, some of them look at us like we have 7 heads,” says Glenda Esperance, principal of Park Place Community Middle School in Brooklyn, where this pup — Peter Parker — works. “First, they look at us like we’re nuts, but then they want to be part of the circus.” It’s Peter Parker’s job lend an ear, without judgment, to students receiving speech therapy. The golden retriever-Border collie mix’s unique line of work is a result of the Comfort Dog program of the Education Department, which pairs certain schools with dogs from the North Shore Animal League America. A staff member adopts a specially screened dog, who’s then welcome at the school to offer a dose of furry emotional support. So far, 7 schools participate in the program, with 10 dogs among them. There are big dogs and little dogs, old dogs and young dogs. All the schools, though, use a curriculum called Mutt-i-grees, which structures interactions with the animals around lessons on things like empathy and resilience. @jtaggfoto photographed Peter Parker at work with a pupil while on #nytassignment in Brooklyn.
