Getting into college and making it through can be hard no matter what your circumstances. But for first-generation students — the first in their families to attend college — the challenges are even greater. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ asked 5 first-generation journalism students to interview other first-generation students at their colleges about the challenges they’ve faced. At Florida International University, @scottymacphoto took this portrait of Julian Rozo, Nyamekye Daniel and Antonina Shachar. Nyamekye — who grew up in Barbados and earned her degree after 14 years despite the deaths of her parents, her fiancé, her son and her grandmother — interviewed Julian, a mechanical engineering major from Bogotá, Colombia, and Antonina, a graduate student from Miami. It took Julian almost 3 years after he finished community college to start at Florida International because he had to work full time. “I had to help my family with the groceries, mortgage or whatever else we needed,” the 25-year-old said. “It ended up hurting me in the early stages.” Antonina, 29, wishes she’d figured out earlier how to better manage her course load. “I realized I was overcommitted, and it was unhealthy,” she recalled.
