13 years ago, Nello Ferrara was just a wannabe hockey player, a 27-year-old bruiser with but a handful of junior and minor league games on his résumé. But he had big dreams. #Hockey, he’d found, was all that allowed him to escape his crumbling personal life, which existed in the shadow of his family’s business, a famous American confectionery behemoth. But wealth, power and status never captured Nello. Hockey did. Despite limited natural skill, by 2004 he’d patched together the first season of what would become a wild and improbable career right out of the script pages of “MacGyver.” Between 2003 to 2014, he did more than 20 stints with 19 minor league teams, many of which no longer exist. He scored only one goal, in 2012. Now 41, Nello hasn’t played a professional hockey game since 2014. But he has become something of an entrepreneur, his savings invested in 4 restaurants, 5 rental properties and a gym. And while he acknowledges that “I don’t have a future as a player,” he keeps himself in shape, just in case. @whittensabbatini photographed #NelloFerrara at home in Chicago.
