Ralph DeMasi was an aging mobster living a quiet life in Massachusetts. Then, shortly after he turned 80, his past came calling: the police came to arrest him on a charge of murder committed 25 years ago. A few months before their visit, Ralph — once a feared member of the New England underworld whose long résumé included truck hijackings and home invasions — invited our writer Dan Barry into his home. Inside: a half-century archive of persistent criminality. Ralph, his lean body scarred by several bullets and one ice-pick stabbing, showed Dan Christmas cards from Whitey Bulger, the murderous former fugitive. He showed him the closet where he kept copies of indictments, appeals of convictions, transcripts of wiretapped conversations (“I’ve got a crew of guys, I’ll tell you, and we rob armoreds, we rob armored trucks. …”). He was forgetful, so to help him remember all that he’d done and seen, he kept a framed newspaper article: “Tips For Improving Your Memory.” But some things cannot be forgotten.
