Deep in the #Amazon jungle, a squad of nerds is on the loose. One member spent more than a decade as an environmental activist. Another studied Arctic oceanography. Their commander is a former high school science teacher. Together, they have forged one of Latin America’s most feared elite fighting units, on the front lines of Brazil’s struggle to curb the destruction of the Amazon — everything from animal smuggling to #deforestation, which is surging once again. “We wanted to combat these dealings with brains as well as boots on the ground,” said the team’s commander, Roberto Cabral. In March, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @simongromero went on patrol with the 9-member unit. They work in places so remote that it takes days to get there, so they usually patrol in helicopters first. When the choppers lifted off with @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists aboard, they flew monotonously for long stretches over lands cleared for cattle ranching. The photographer Lalo de Almeida captured this deforested area in Maranhão State, near the border with the state of Pará.
