Want to be a better person in 2017? “Live like Bill.” No one treasured independence more than the late, great @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer Bill Cunningham. “Once people own you,” he once said, “they can tell you what to do. So don’t let ’em.” @nytimesfashion advises readers to live by his immortal words. Bill, who started photographing people on the street during World War II, died earlier this year. He was such a singular presence in New York City that, in 2009, he was designated a living landmark. And he was an easy one to spot, riding his bicycle through Midtown Manhattan. In October, scores of friends, fans and NYC dignitaries convened at Carnegie Hall to pay their respects to the ubiquitous blue-coated figure who’d captured their best selves on film. And that’s where the photographer @landonnordeman took this photo, which appears in the #NYTYearInPictures2016. To see @nytimesfashion’s semi-serious list of self-improvement tips, gleaned from the stories that resonated most with readers this year, visit the link in our profile. (And seriously: Live like Bill.)
