Many New Yorkers didn’t live long enough to witness the opening of the first section of the Second Avenue subway. But for longtime supporters and skeptics in their golden years, it’s a joyous moment — one that took a very long time to arrive. As the project dragged on for nearly a century, they lost spouses and colleagues. They watched NYC decline and flourish, and plans for the Second Avenue line start up again. Beginning on Sunday, they’ll make a pilgrimage to the Upper East Side for a ride some thought they might never take on a subway that has been dreamed of since the 1920s. In 1972, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Neal Boenzi took this photo of Mayor John V. Lindsay, right, and Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller at a groundbreaking for the Second Avenue subway. It was not the last one. #? #tbt
