The Islamic State’s control of Mosul and the nearby area in Iraq separated families for long stretches. These relatives, reunited on the side of the road, hadn’t seen one another in 2 years when the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Tyler Hicks took this photo. The battle for Mosul has forced many tens of thousands from their homes, and displaced people are a common sight along the roads across the city. Tyler spent 3 weeks on the ever-shifting front line in the battle against ISIS for Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. First, he was embedded with the Iraqi Army in eastern Mosul and then, after setbacks for the army, with units of the Iraqi federal police. “For the civilians trapped by the fighting,” Tyler writes, “life is bleak, and most are desperate to leave.” Along the contested front, there is no water, no electricity and no way for people to obtain the supplies they need.
