Venezuela has long suffered from one of the world’s highest crime rates. But the country’s economic crisis, which has upended everything from its hospitals to its food supply, has deepened the misery and criminality. Armed gangs, which residents say kidnap, steal and kill, have established a tight grip over neighborhoods. In a bid to restore order, the government has turned to the institution it trusts the most: the military. But the resulting actions have drawn criticism. Venezuela’s armed forces have launched commando-style anti-crime raids that human rights groups and survivors say have killed hundreds of people, many of them innocent. @meridithkohut photographed these gang members in Bolívar State, in eastern Venezuela.
