The @usmarinecorps taught Sam Siatta how to shoot. The war in Afghanistan taught him how to kill. But nobody taught him how to come home. In April 2014, Sam was a 24-year-old freshman studying on the GI Bill at @illinoisstateu in Normal, Illinois, a prairie town about 130 miles southwest of Chicago. One night, while deep in a tequila haze, Sam forced his way into a house he apparently thought was his. In the house was another young Marine veteran. The 2 fought. Sam had a frying pan. The other man had a knife. Sam, who suffers from PTSD, was hospitalized with serious knife wounds. Then he was charged with home invasion. Sam had served in combat in Afghanistan, where he proved to be an exceptional shot. “He killed people who would have killed other people, including some of us,” a platoon mate said. The memories tormented him. “He needs treatment,” his VA psychiatrist said. Sam's lawyers argued his PTSD should keep him out of prison. Prosecutors disagreed. When the writer @cjchivers met him there, he saw in Sam the story of the war in Afghanistan, and of trying to move on. @dedecim photographed Sam and his girlfriend, Ashley Volk, while on assignment for @nytmag.
