In #NewYorkCity’s tabloid newspapers, they’ve been derided as “clown cars.” The city’s last police commissioner described them as “midget cars. But #NYC can’t seem to get enough of the @nypd’s expanding fleet of Smart cars. These tiny, bean-shaped vehicles are safer, cheaper and easier to operate than the 3-wheeled scooters that for decades have had their own peculiar place in New York’s vast fleet of otherwise muscular police vehicles. The officers appreciate the air-conditioning, and there’s another unexpected benefit: The 2-seat vehicles make an effective icebreaker. The Smart car is quite possibly the only @nypd vehicle that has its picture routinely shared on social media alongside words like "adorable" or, in one case, "Cuuuuuute." @christianhitehansen photographed one of the #NYPD’s Smart Fortwos while on #nytassignment in New York.
