Waves frozen in mid-crash, piles of whipped cream or large pillars of cotton candy — what do you see? Welcome to nature’s outdoor sculpture park. The spruces that dot this normally-barren landscape in #Finland develop a hard, frosty covering when the tiny water droplets in fog, clouds or humidity make contact with their branches — freezing instantly. (Imagine your freezer in serious need of defrosting.) The best place to see the trees is up #Kukastunturi, a 1,555-foot-high Arctic fell where @ilvynjio took this photo. On top of the fell, it was “windless, silent and still,” writes the @nytimestravel writer Penelope Colston, who traveled there from the ski resort area of Yllas, about 90 miles north of the Arctic Circle and about 500 miles north of Helsinki. “Up close, the rime-encrusted trees were larger and more surreal than I had expected. They even had distinct personalities — some looked like gentle giants, while others appeared downright sinister as they cast long blue shadows on the pristine snow.” ?❄️
