#Venezuela was once one of Latin America’s richest countries. Now, hungry Venezuelans are fleeing in boats to escape economic collapse. In the last year, well over 150,000 Venezuelans — the same impoverished people President Hugo Chávez’s Socialist-inspired policies were supposed to help — have fled the country. The image of flight by sea is symbolic of perilous journeys taken to escape Cuba or Haiti — but not oil-rich Venezuela. The photographer @meridithkohut took this photo of Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard members patrolling Caracas Bay, looking for smugglers and Venezuelan migrants en route to Curaçao. To get to the Caribbean island, it's a 60-mile crossing, one that's filled with backbreaking swells, gangs of armed boatmen and coast guard vessels looking to capture migrants and send them home. But, if against all odds, they do arrive, Curaçao has effectively sealed its borders to poor Venezuelans by making them show $1,000 in cash before entering.
