The Binghamton, a 111-year-old Hudson River #ferryboat, is about to make its final voyage. With each passing year, and with each passing storm, the boat has grown more dilapidated. Today, it’s an eyesore damaged beyond repair, leaning to one side on the muddy river bottom in Edgewater, New Jersey. But the 230-foot boat has a rich history. The Binghamton plied the Hudson between Hoboken and Barclay Street in Manhattan from 1905 to 1967. Then in the early 1970s, Nelson G. Gross, a Republican power broker and millionaire, bought the vessel, renovated it with Victorian riverboat décor and recast it as a restaurant, Binghamton’s, which opened in 1976. Like his ferryboat, Nelson led a life filled with drama. In 1997, he was abducted by a Binghamton’s busboy and 2 companions and then murdered. 10 years later, the floating restaurant closed. @karstenmoran took this photo of the 111-year-old Hudson ferryboat.
