As #cannabis increasingly goes legitimate — about 2 dozen states had already legalized it in some form before others eased restrictions on Election Day — electric utilities are struggling to cope with the #marijuana industry’s intensive energy demands. As a result, one electric company is subsidizing a high-stakes experiment at @evergrownw, an indoor pot-farming business in Tumwater, Washington. The test: how do LED lights compare to high-pressure sodium bulbs when it comes to growing cannabis? LED lights — more expensive up front — require much less energy to operate than the hot, high-intensity lights traditionally used by indoor producers, and they run cooler, requiring less air-conditioning. The results so far: The plants in @evergrownw’s “energy-suck room” produce a few more flowers but with a bit less potency. @iancbates photographed these marijuana plants while on #nytassignment in Washington State.
