Every year, #Chile produces 24 million pounds of wool. Much of that #wool comes from Tierra del Fuego, a group of islands at the tip of South America that were once home to indigenous groups. Just before the turn of the 20th century, the area was settled by European and Chilean ranchers. Little has changed since. Locals mark time by the length of the #sheep’s woolly coats. And once a year, cowboys and shepherds drive their flocks home to the large ranches that dot the island. There in giant sheds, the shearing begins: a frenzy of flying wool, bawdy talk and a rare communal meal shared among neighbors who live miles apart. Using electric clippers, a good shearer can shave up to 250 sheep a day. After the shearing is complete, the #wool is collected, classified for quality and stored in large plastic bags.
