When the fall storms come to Shaktoolik, Alaska, they almost always come at night, the waves hurling giant driftwood logs onto the beach like toothpicks, the river rising, the wind shaking the windows of the houses that sit in 2 orderly rows along the village’s single road. 50 years ago, when the beach was a quarter of a mile away, the increasing violence of the ocean might not have bothered Shaktoolik’s 250 or so residents. But now the sea is almost at their doorsteps. Laid out on a narrow spit of sand between the Tagoomenik River and the Bering Sea, Shaktoolik is facing an imminent threat from increased flooding and erosion, signs of a changing climate. The endangered Alaskan community faces a choice. Shaktoolik residents could move to higher ground, which could cost as much as $200 million. Or they could stay put and hope to find money to fortify their buildings and shore up their coastline. For the time being, Shaktoolik has decided to “stay and defend,” the mayor said. @joshhaner took this photo while on #nytassignment in Shaktoolik.
