“Yes, that's a bunker persisting in this remote clearing in Brazil's Amazon jungle,” writes @simongromero, the Brazil bureau chief for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “During World War II, the U.S. Navy built such fortifications into the landscape in the interior of Amapá State. I was on the long drive back to Macapá on a recent reporting trip when a Brazilian archaeologist told me about the abandoned American military base. We pulled off the road to have a look. In its heyday, the Navy used the complex to operate blimps on missions to find German submarines in the Atlantic. After the war, the Brazilian Air Force took control of the base until definitively abandoning it in recent years. Some parts of the site have a Chernobyl-esque feel, with computers, flight logs and vaccination records exposed to the elements. The jungle is enveloping some of the old wooden structures. Families of squatters live in the cavernous barracks that once housed American airmen, making what was once a militarized no-go zone into a homestead on the Amazonian frontier. The emptiness of the place, under Amapá's sublime skies, reminded me a bit of New Mexico.” This week, @simongromero is posting images of the #amapaairfield on Instagram.
