The old @unionsquarecafe in Manhattan, beloved as it was, closed almost a year ago in response to a steep rent increase. The new #UnionSquareCafe, which will open next week, is about 4 blocks from the original in a much grander, light-filled space with high ceilings. “It’s all different,” Florence Fabricant writes in @nytfood, “but, as with an old friend who has had a nose job, the face and voice are still the same.” Its warm cherry wood, dark-green wainscoting and most of the art on the walls evoke the original restaurant. But the addition of a second bar area upstairs has increased capacity to more than 150.
