6 scientists scoured the wilds of northern Alaska, traveling almost 1,000 miles, for one prize: Bombus polaris, the Arctic bumblebee. Other bumblebees live in the Arctic, but polaris manages to survive in Greenland, as well as in the northern reaches of Ellesmere Island in the Canadian high Arctic. It’s adapted so well to the cold that by shivering its muscles it can raise its internal temperature to more than 95 degrees when it’s 32 outside. The researchers traveled to Alaska to learn about the condition of bumblebees in the Arctic, where climate change is occurring at a rapid rate. Some changes are already obvious. Others will come, like for instance, new species of bees arriving to compete with species, like Bombus polaris, that are adapted to the old conditions. The photographer @katieorlinsky took this photo of Jessica Purcell and her husband, Alan Brelsford, both assistant professors at @ucriversideofficial, hunting for the Arctic bumblebee at the Toolik Field Station, an Arctic research base run by the @uafairbanks. #?
