The Washington Monument officially opened to the public in October 1888, 4 years after its exterior was completed. For a short time before that date, visitors had been permitted to climb to the top of the 555-foot-tall obelisk, taking the stairs and carrying their own lights — or, climbing in pitch darkness. But the structure was closed to guests in 1887, after “contemptible vandals” defaced its interior, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. By the time of its official opening in 1888, though, the #WashingtonMonument boasted an interior "brilliantly lighted” by electricity, as well as working elevators. Flash forward to 2016: The monument has been closed since late September. And it’ll remain closed “until the elevator control system is modernized,” the @nationalmallnps tweeted. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer George Tames took this #aerial photo of the Washington Monument in 1957. (Psst: Want to see more photos like this #tbt? Follow @nytarchives.)
