Carol Haddon, whose baseball-bedecked hand is pictured here, has been a Chicago @シカゴ・カブス season-ticket holder for 45 years. She has attended at least 2,000 games at #WrigleyField, keeping score at each one from her first-row seat behind the home dugout. This year, her team has again made the playoffs, and with the best record in baseball, they’re the favorites to win the World Series. This might make other teams and their fans ecstatic. But in Chicago, there’s a thinly veiled, repressed gloom that comes with having your heart broken so often. After all, the #Cubs haven’t won the World Series since 1908, nor have they competed in one since 1945. “Everyone is a little afraid to be so excited,” Carol told @nytimessports. “We’re all afraid. Well, I’m not afraid because I believe we will win. We should win. We’re the best team in baseball.” Sally Ryan photographed Carol and other hopeful @シカゴ・カブス fans while on assignment for @nytimessports in Chicago. #⚾
