Situated in the historically African-American Jackson Ward Historic District of Richmond, @bhmva reopened last May in the First Battalion Virginia Volunteers Armory — known as the Leigh Street Armory — after an extensive renovation. The red brick, 2-story building, built in 1895, was once the only armory in Richmond for an African-American militia unit. Today, it’s a trove of African-American milestones. Interactive touch screens chronicle such events as the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1867 and 1868 and the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Other highlights: replicas of luncheonette tables and stools from segregation sit-ins and a statue of the Richmond native and tennis great Arthur Ashe. @bhmva is among the many lures of #Richmond.
