This week’s #tbt is a #regram from our new launched home for old photos, @nytarchives: When @Walt Disney World opened in Buena Vista, Florida, on October 1, 1971 — 45 years ago this week — everything went well except for one thing: The $400-million park drew only a paper-thin crowd. @Disney officials said that about 10,000 paying customers visited the 100-acre attraction, far below the expected crush, which was predicted to be about 3 times that number. But surprisingly enough, #Disney officials were relieved: They said the undersized crowd helped prepare the park’s 7,000 inexperienced employees for a turnout that was sure to ramp up the following weekend. All things considered, those who did visit @Walt Disney World on opening day weren’t disappointed: They enjoyed almost flawless fall weather and short lines for attractions, like the scenic boat tour, pictured here.
