He’s huge in Minnesota. Huge. In the town of Bemidji, Paul Bunyan towers like Colossus over the lake. Even in this age of hyperbole, it’s no exaggeration to say that many Minnesotans still hold the gargantuan lumberjack in reverence. #PaulBunyan was given life in the late 19th century by the oxygen of stories told around the logging camps of the Great Lakes. He existed in a world so cold that spoken words froze in the air. In 1937, Bemidji built this oddly proportioned statue, 18 feet tall and 2 and a half tons. Now, the town also boasts the Paul Bunyan Sub Shop, the Paul Bunyan Communications Company and the Paul Bunyan Mall — just off Paul Bunyan Drive. @kodak is said to have once declared Bemidji’s Bunyan statue the second-most-photographed attraction in the country. (The manager of the visitors center — where a live-streaming camera captures the statue’s every moment of stillness — has yet to find any record of this honor.) The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @heislerphoto took his own photos of Bunyan earlier this month while visiting Bemidji with the reporter @danbarry1958.
